Steve Allen

Steve Allen (Deceased) was an American television personality, comedian, musician, composer, actor, and author who became one of the most influential figures in early television. Born Stephen Valentine Patrick William Allen on December 26, 1921, in New York City, he began his career in radio before becoming a major television star. Allen is best remembered as the original host of "The Tonight Show," beginning in 1954. His combination of comedy, interviews, audience participation, musical performances, and spontaneous sketches helped establish the basic format that late-night television would follow for decades. He later hosted "The Steve Allen Show," which featured comedy, music, celebrity guests, and an influential group of performers that included Don Knotts, Louis Nye, Tom Poston, and Bill Dana. Allen was known for his quick wit, improvisational ability, and willingness to experiment with unusual television formats. In addition to his television career, Allen was a prolific composer and songwriter, credited with writing thousands of songs. He also appeared in films, including "The Benny Goodman Story," in which he portrayed legendary bandleader Benny Goodman. Allen wrote numerous books covering humor, entertainment, social issues, and other subjects. Steve Allen died on October 30, 2000, at age 78.
