Deceased — Neil Sedaka was an American singer, songwriter, composer, and pianist who became one of pop music’s most successful hitmakers. Born March 13, 1939, in Brooklyn, New York, he was a classically trained pianist who studied at the Juilliard School before turning his attention to popular music. Sedaka rose to fame in the late 1950s and early 1960s with hits including “Oh! Carol,” “Calendar Girl,” “Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen,” and “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do.” He frequently collaborated with lyricist Howard Greenfield, and together they wrote numerous songs for Sedaka and other performers. After his popularity declined during the British Invasion, Sedaka achieved a major comeback in the 1970s with songs such as “Laughter in the Rain” and “Bad Blood.” He also co-wrote “Love Will Keep Us Together,” which became a major hit for Captain & Tennille. Over a career spanning more than six decades, Sedaka wrote hundreds of songs and became recognized as one of the most prolific pop composers of his generation. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1983. Neil Sedaka died on February 27, 2026, at the age of 86.
