Ruth Buzzi Ruth Buzzi is an American actress and comedian best known for her work on the television comedy series Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In. She was born on July 24, 1936, in Westerly, Rhode Island. Buzzi became famous for a variety of comic characters, particularly the dowdy, hairnet-wearing Gladys Ormphby, who often carried a purse that she used as a weapon against unwanted attention. Her performances on Laugh-In earned her widespread recognition and several award nominations. Before and after Laugh-In, Buzzi worked extensively in television, theater, and voice acting. She appeared on programs including The Dean Martin Show, The Carol Burnett Show, The Monkees, and Sesame Street. She also supplied voices for numerous animated productions. Buzzi appeared in films such as Freaky Friday, The North Avenue Irregulars, and The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again. Her long career included comedy, children’s television, variety shows, and guest appearances. She became one of the most recognizable female comedians of the late 1960s and 1970s and remains strongly associated with the groundbreaking ensemble comedy of Laugh-In.
