James Garner - Maverick - Rockford Files

James Garner (Deceased) (April 7, 1928 – July 19, 2014) was an American actor best known for his easygoing charm, dry humor, and leading roles in both television and film. Born James Scott Bumgarner in Norman, Oklahoma, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and received two Purple Hearts. After returning home, he began acting and gained widespread fame as gambler Bret Maverick in the television Western Maverick, which premiered in 1957. Garner later became equally well known as private investigator Jim Rockford in The Rockford Files, which ran from 1974 to 1980. His performance earned him an Emmy Award and made the character one of television’s most popular detectives. His film career included notable roles in The Great Escape (1963), Grand Prix (1966), Support Your Local Sheriff! (1969), Victor/Victoria (1982), Murphy’s Romance (1985), and The Notebook (2004). He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for Murphy’s Romance. Garner remained a popular and respected performer for decades and is remembered for his naturalistic acting style, likable screen presence, and ability to move easily between comedy, drama, Westerns, and romantic roles.
