(Deceased) James Garner (April 7, 1928 – July 19, 2014) was an American actor best known for starring as Bret Maverick in the television western Maverick and as private investigator Jim Rockford in The Rockford Files. His notable films included The Great Escape, Grand Prix, Victor/Victoria, Murphy’s Romance, Space Cowboys, and The Notebook. Garner was admired for his relaxed charm, natural humor, and versatility across westerns, comedies, dramas, and action roles.
