The Coasters - Poison Ivy

The Coasters were an American rhythm and blues and rock and roll vocal group whose humorous songs, lively performances, and clever storytelling made them one of the most distinctive groups of the 1950s and early 1960s. The group developed from an earlier Los Angeles vocal group called The Robins and became closely associated with the songwriting and production team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Their recordings combined rhythm and blues with comedy, character sketches, and catchy vocal arrangements. The Coasters scored a long series of memorable hits, including "Searchin'," "Young Blood," "Yakety Yak," "Charlie Brown," "Along Came Jones," "Poison Ivy," and "Little Egypt." "Yakety Yak" became one of their biggest successes, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard rhythm and blues chart and becoming a major pop hit. Their songs often featured humorous situations involving teenagers, parents, school, romance, and exaggerated characters. The distinctive saxophone work heard on many of their recordings also became an important part of their sound. The Coasters experienced numerous lineup changes over the years, but their classic recordings remained popular on oldies radio and in films, television programs, and compilation albums. The Coasters were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. Their combination of rhythm and blues, rock and roll, humor, and vocal harmony helped make them one of the most influential and entertaining vocal groups of their era.
