Joan Baez is an American singer, songwriter, musician, and activist whose distinctive soprano voice made her one of the most influential figures in the folk music movement of the 1960s. Born January 9, 1941, in Staten Island, New York, she became known for traditional folk songs, protest music, and interpretations of contemporary songwriters. Baez helped introduce wider audiences to Bob Dylan by performing and recording his songs during the early 1960s. Her best-known recordings include "Diamonds & Rust," "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," "We Shall Overcome," and "Donna Donna." She performed at the 1969 Woodstock festival and became closely associated with the American civil rights and antiwar movements.
