Gary Lewis and the Playboys were an American pop-rock group formed in the 1960s and led by singer and drummer Gary Lewis, the son of comedian and actor Jerry Lewis. The group became one of the most successful American bands of the mid-1960s, beginning with their 1965 No. 1 hit “This Diamond Ring.” They followed it with a string of popular singles including “Count Me In,” “Save Your Heart for Me,” “Everybody Loves a Clown,” “She’s Just My Style,” and “Sure Gonna Miss Her.” Gary Lewis served as the group’s lead vocalist and drummer, and their records were known for catchy melodies, polished arrangements, and a clean pop sound that appealed strongly to teenage audiences. Producer Snuff Garrett played an important role in shaping the group’s recordings. The Playboys’ chart success declined after Gary Lewis entered the U.S. Army in 1967 during the Vietnam War era. After his military service, Lewis resumed performing, and various versions of Gary Lewis and the Playboys continued appearing in concerts and oldies shows. The group remains closely associated with the upbeat pop sound of the mid-1960s and is remembered for a remarkably consistent run of hit singles.
