Arie Luyendyk - Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner

Arie Luyendyk Arie Luyendyk is a Dutch former automobile racing driver best known for his success in the Indianapolis 500. He was born on September 21, 1953, in Sommelsdijk, Netherlands. Luyendyk began racing in Europe before moving to the United States, where he became a prominent competitor in Indy car racing. He earned the nickname “The Flying Dutchman” for his speed and aggressive driving style. He won the Indianapolis 500 twice, first in 1990 and again in 1997. His 1990 victory was achieved at a record average speed that stood for many years. Luyendyk was also known for his exceptional qualifying performances at Indianapolis and set several speed records at the track. In addition to his Indianapolis victories, he won other major Indy car events and competed successfully in endurance racing, including the 24 Hours of Daytona. Luyendyk retired from professional racing after a career spanning several decades. He was inducted into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame and remains one of the most successful Dutch drivers in American open-wheel racing history.
