Boots Randolph

Boots Randolph (Deceased) Homer Louis “Boots” Randolph III (1927–2007) was an American saxophonist best known for his energetic tenor saxophone playing and his 1963 instrumental hit “Yakety Sax.” The tune became internationally recognizable after it was used for many years as the closing-theme music for the British television comedy The Benny Hill Show. Born in Paducah, Kentucky, and raised in Cadiz, Randolph began playing music at a young age. After serving in the U.S. Army, he developed a career as a professional musician and eventually became an important member of Nashville’s celebrated group of studio musicians known as the “Nashville A-Team.” Randolph performed on recordings by numerous major artists, including Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Brenda Lee, and Chet Atkins. His distinctive saxophone can be heard on many country, pop, and rock recordings from the 1950s through the 1970s. In addition to his studio work, Randolph recorded numerous albums under his own name and became a popular live entertainer. His style combined country, jazz, pop, and rhythm-and-blues influences, helping make the saxophone a familiar sound in Nashville recordings. Randolph remained active in music for decades and was widely respected for both his technical ability and his instantly recognizable sound.
