Joan Fontaine - Academy Award for Hitchcock's Suspicion

Joan Fontaine (Deceased) (October 22, 1917 – December 15, 2013) was a British-American actress and one of the major stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Born Joan de Beauvoir de Havilland in Tokyo, Japan, she was the younger sister of actress Olivia de Havilland. Fontaine began acting in the 1930s and gained major recognition with Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca (1940), for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. The following year, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for Hitchcock’s Suspicion (1941), becoming the only actor to win an Oscar for a performance in a Hitchcock-directed film. Fontaine went on to star in many notable films, including Jane Eyre (1943), The Constant Nymph (1943), Letter from an Unknown Woman (1948), and Ivanhoe (1952). She was particularly effective in romantic dramas and suspense films, often portraying intelligent, vulnerable, or emotionally conflicted women. Her career also included stage and television work. Fontaine remained a celebrated figure from classic Hollywood and was known for her elegance, refined screen presence, and memorable performances in some of the era’s most enduring films.
