Greer Garson - Academy Award for Mrs. Miniver

Greer Garson (Deceased) (September 29, 1904 – April 6, 1996) was a British-American actress and one of the leading Hollywood stars of the 1940s. Born in London, Garson worked in advertising and performed on the British stage before being discovered by MGM. She made a major impression in her first Hollywood film, Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939), earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. Garson became especially famous for portraying strong, dignified women in dramas such as Pride and Prejudice (1940), Blossoms in the Dust (1941), Mrs. Miniver (1942), Madame Curie (1943), and Mrs. Parkington (1944). Her performance in Mrs. Miniver, as a courageous English wife and mother during World War II, earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress. She received a total of seven Academy Award nominations during her career. Garson continued acting in films through the 1960s and also appeared occasionally on television. Later in life, she and her husband, E.E. “Buddy” Fogelson, became noted philanthropists. She is remembered for her elegance, intelligence, warm screen presence, and portrayals of resilient women during Hollywood’s Golden Age.
