Marla Gibbs - The Jeffersons

Marla Gibbs (born June 14, 1931) is an American actress, singer, comedian, writer, and television producer best known for her memorable roles in several popular television comedies. Born Margaret Theresa Bradley in Chicago, Illinois, Gibbs worked as an airline reservations agent before pursuing acting. She gained national recognition as Florence Johnston, the sharp-tongued maid on The Jeffersons. Originally a recurring character, Florence became so popular that Gibbs was made a regular cast member. She played the role from 1975 to 1985 and received multiple Emmy Award nominations for her performance. Gibbs later starred as Mary Jenkins on the NBC sitcom 227, which aired from 1985 to 1990. She also served as a producer on the series and helped establish it as another successful television comedy. Over the years, Gibbs has appeared in numerous films and television programs, including The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, ER, The Hughleys, Grey’s Anatomy, and Station 19. Known for her comic timing, distinctive delivery, and strong screen presence, Gibbs has remained a respected and enduring figure in American television.
