Lou Gossett Jr. - An Officer and a Gentleman

Lou Gossett Jr. (Deceased) (May 27, 1936 – March 29, 2024) was an American actor whose career in film, television, and theater spanned more than six decades. Born Louis Cameron Gossett Jr. in Brooklyn, New York, he began acting as a teenager and made his Broadway debut while still in high school. He later gained national attention for his role in the original Broadway production of A Raisin in the Sun and appeared in the 1961 film version. Gossett became widely known for playing Fiddler in the landmark television miniseries Roots (1977), a performance that earned him an Emmy Award. One of his most famous roles was Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley in An Officer and a Gentleman (1982). His powerful performance earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, making him the first Black actor to win the Oscar in that category. He also appeared in films such as The Deep, Iron Eagle, Enemy Mine, and Diggstown, as well as numerous television productions. Gossett was respected for his commanding screen presence and his ability to portray both authority figures and deeply complex characters.
