Ben Johnson - Shane

Ben Johnson (Deceased) (June 13, 1918 – April 8, 1996) was an American actor, stuntman, cowboy, and rodeo performer best known for his authentic portrayals of Western characters. Born in Foraker, Oklahoma, Johnson grew up around ranching and horses and became an accomplished rodeo cowboy. His skill as a horseman led him to Hollywood, where he initially worked as a stuntman and wrangler before moving into acting. Johnson became closely associated with director John Ford and appeared in several classic Westerns, including She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), Wagon Master (1950), and Rio Grande (1950). He later appeared in Shane (1953), One-Eyed Jacks (1961), The Wild Bunch (1969), and numerous other films and television programs. His most acclaimed performance came in The Last Picture Show (1971), in which he played Sam the Lion. The role earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Johnson continued acting into the 1990s and was admired for bringing genuine Western experience and understated realism to his roles. He is remembered as one of Hollywood’s most respected Western character actors.
