(Deceased) Lew Ayres (born December 28, 1908 – died December 30, 1996) was an American actor best known for starring as Paul Bäumer in the classic antiwar film All Quiet on the Western Front. He also played Dr. James Kildare in a popular series of films and appeared in such notable movies as Holiday, Johnny Belinda, The Dark Mirror, and Advise & Consent. A committed pacifist, Ayres served as a medic and chaplain’s assistant during World War II and later received an Academy Award nomination for his performance in Johnny Belinda.
